Preliminary analyses of Forbush decreases in mid-February of 1978 and of ground increases of cosmic rays on May 7, 1978 are presented. The increases were the largest since 1960 and the Forbush decrease is comparable only to the giant decreases in July 1959 and August 1972. The observed effects are distinguished not only by their magnitude but also by their extraordinary anisotropy.
