Ariel 5 sky survey results relating to the spatial distribution of extragalactic X-ray sources are examined. The form of the X-ray source counts is considered, and the observed distribution of X-ray luminosity in a statistical sample of 2A sources is described. The X-ray luminosity functions of the two main classes of identified sources are then determined. These luminosity functions are used to predict the form of the X-ray source counts at low fluxes and to estimate the contribution of clusters of galaxies and active galaxies to the diffuse X-ray background in the energy range from 2 to 10 keV.
