It is well known that the number of optically emitting jets is a small fraction of the total number of radio jets, but it is not well understood what determines the presence or absence of optical emission. This paper describes a variety of optical observations of different classes of extragalactic jets. The optical work has been combined with studies at other wavelengths in an attempt to improve the understanding of the nature of jets and how they interact with their immediate surroundings.
