The wavelength dependence of the extinction by dust in three southern galaxies is investigated. The wavelength dependence in the UV relative to the blue is steeper than the typical Galactic extinction law. Similar findings for other galaxies were interpreted as indicating smaller sizes of the 'large' grains responsible for the extinction of light in the optical spectrum when compared with typical Galactic dust. Effects which may modify the observed extinction, other than the dust itself, are ruled out.
