Advances in radio-astronomy techniques have made it possible to enhance image resolution and to reconstruct radio images of extragalactic objects on the basis of their radio emission. Cygnus A as prototype of extended extragalactic radio sources is discussed. Attention is given to aspects of the gigantic extension of the observed binary radio sources. The characteristics of the radio emission of the binary sources are considered along with the difficulties involved in a satisfactory theoretical explanation of the observed phenomena. A brief description of the most important models is presented, taking into account the twin exhaust model, the explosion model, and the gravitational slingshot concept.
