The Eight-Color Asteroid Survey (ECAS) filters show the presence of shallow absorption features in reflectance photometry of solid bodies (Vilas, Icarus 111, 1994), as well as the UV/blue ferric iron intervalence charge transfer transition and the presence and depth of the M1 mafic silicate absorption feature (Zellner et al., Icarus 61, 1985). Additional data for many small and faint Solar System bodies are available in standard astronomical UBVRI filters. Comparing the ECAS filters to other filter sets, the UBV filters generally correspond to the same central wavelengths in all filter sets. Some differences exist in the central wavelengths and passbands among the longer wavelength ECAS filters and various R and I filters available to astronomers. In an effort to extract spectral reflectance information from UBVRI data, we tested different filter characteristics to determine if features could be identified in data obtained using those filters. We established ranges of central wavelength and passband widths that could be used to identify different spectral features or characteristics in the UBVRI filters. The authors acknowledge funding from the NASA Planetary Astronomy program.
