The review is primarily devoted to very recently acquired data on extra-terrestrial geology noting that, especially since the inception of the NASA Apollo project, scientific emphasis has changed from remote observation to in situ field investigation. Knowledge gained from companion worlds will probably provide a clearer insight into terrestrial processes. The Apollo missions and the Mariner probes of Mars provided a vast amount of new data on the surface characteristics, interior features, physicochemical properties, and geological histories of these bodies as well as their possible origins. Some observations are also made on the two inner planets and two of the outer ones, as well as the Jovian satellite Io and several asteroids.
