Observations of the v = 1-0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen in the nucleus and inner spiral arms of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 are reported. Spectra of the nucleus, for which the v = 2-1 S(1) line was also observed, confirm that the lines are collisionally excited. Significant detections were made at two of the seven positions at which spectra were recorded in the inner spiral arms. The inner region of NGC 1068 is known to be turbulent, with H-alpha linewidths of up to approximately 100 km/s and little correlation between linewidth and the positions of the bright H II regions. It has been suggested in a previous publication that this turbulence may be the result of nuclear outflow interacting with the galactic disc. It is suggested here that the molecular hydrogen is excited by a shock driven by this outflow.
