The incorporation of stellar observations acquired in space into the Fourth Fundamental Catalog (FK4) and eventually the FK5 system is discussed, such that these mainly faint stars allow extension of the system. Differential observations with 0.01 arc sec accuracy from spaceborne equipment are capable of extending the present reference system down to magnitude 10, or possible 17. Suitably selected faint stars in the vicinity of radio sources facilitate the interconnection of the optical and radio systems.
