The Spectrum Tools is a package we developed within the Herschel Common Science System (HCSS) to handle spectral data. The package design relies on Java interface concepts to allow tools to interoperate across the data processing environments of the three Herschel science instruments. The concepts presented here also have the potential to make the Spectrum Tools interoperable with other tools, such as Plastic-enabled applications, thus extending the range of science analysis problems they can address.
