We propose to obtain spectra of the host galaxies of high-redshift supernovae (SNe) that were found in the course of the ESSENCE survey. Although SNe are useful tools for cosmology, systematic errors are now comparable to statistical errors associated with the number of high- redshift SNe. Spectra of the host galaxies will provide estimates of star-formation rates and metallicity. These in turn will help to characterize the progenitor populations of the SNe in these galaxies and allow for a more accurate treatment of extinction. In addition, spectra will provide more accurate redshifts for many SNe in the survey, as well as improve identification of previously observed objects. The Gemini spectra are part of a larger campaign to obtain a complete sample of spectra of all host galaxies of SNe found by the ESSENCE survey.
