We propose to conduct a deep narrowband imaging survey for H(alpha) emission at z 0.8. We are targeting fields for which an abundance of ancillary data, such as spectroscopy and multi-wavelength photometry, are available. By surveying a total of sqdeg square degrees in a customized narrowband filter (plus J band for continuum), we expect to detect over 1000 galaxies in H(alpha) with a 5σ limiting star formation rate (SFR) of 2 h_70^-2 M_&sun; yr^-1. The equivalent widths and SFRs derived from these data will be used to: (1) characterize the star formation properties of galaxies which exist at a time when the universe was half its present age, (2) quantify the systematic errors in the SFR tracers that are used when H(alpha) is not observable in the optical window, (3) quantify the incompleteness, with respect to a SFR-limited sample, that are incurred by other techniques used to select galaxies at that redshift (4) provide an essential baseline to understand the decline of the SFR density since z 1 and (5) provide an additional measurement of the volume averaged star formation rate at that epoch. We envision that the eventual scope of our overall survey will also include narrowband observations at at least two additional redder wavelengths which will sample H(alpha) out to z 2. The proposed observations will thus also help inform the design and execution of these future efforts.
