A series of spectra of the optical counterpart of 4U 1907+09, taken in June 1986 and in June 1987, shows H-alpha in emission, and He I and interstellar lines in absorption. The H-alpha emission profile is found to be variable, possibly in correlation with orbital phase. Two models for the system are discussed, one in which the primary is a Be star with an extended disk, and one in which it is a supergiant with a strong stellar wind. On the basis of the observations presented in this paper and earlier observations taken from the literature, it is shown that the classification of the companion star as a supergiant is virtually certain.
