Observations of the spatial distribution, velocity field, and line intensities of the extended gaseous emission in a small sample of nearby normal elliptical galaxies are reported. Extended H II emission is found in the central regions of roughly half of the sample. The gas appears to be in rotational equilibrium, although the morphology of the detected regions is not disklike. The observed lack of a general correlation between the rotation axes of the gas and the rotation axes or the isophotes of the stellar population can be explained by the gas being either in normal closed orbits in the equatorial plane of a triaxial galaxy or by being in differential precession. Three ionizing mechanisms for the gas are considered: energy provided by normal stellar processes such as ultraviolet stellar photons, stellar winds, and supernova ejecta; gas shed by stars and falling on the central disk of ionized gas; and energy sources not directly related to a normal stellar population.
