EXSAS (Extended Scientifc Analysis System), based on the European Southern Observatory MIDAS image processing system, is a large software system for interactive analysis of X-ray and XUV data from the Rosat satellite. A multitude of typical applications and utilities in the areas of data preparation, correction of instrumental effects, spatial, spectral and timing analysis are implemented in a coherent context. EXSAS will normally be run interactively on workstations, but may also be used in batch mode. Some of the basic features and design criteria of the EXSAS/MIDAS environment that enable observers to effectively work with the system are listed.
