Modelling accretion of material onto a carbon white dwarf in the threshold density for relativistic instability, the author has extended the general relativistic hydrodynamical analysis of Van Riper to the study of the influence of accretion itself, as the mass varies, on the outcome of the collapse. Several fitting formulae for the limiting mass (Newtonian) and the critical mass (relativistic) of white dwarfs of arbitrary chemical composition are also presented.
