An explosive reconnection process associated with the nonlinear evolution of the coalescence instability is discussed through electromagnetic particle simulation and MHD particle simulation. The explosive coalescence of current loops is a process of magnetic collapse, in which the magnetic and electrostatic field energies and temperature explode toward the explosion time t0 as (t0-t)-8/3, (t0-t)-4, and (t0-t)-8/3, respectively. Since explosive coalescence exhibits self-similarity, a self-similar solution to the two-fluid plasma equations is sought. The theory produces indices of explosion in agreement with simulation results. Explosive simultaneous acceleration of ions and electrons becomes possible during the magnetic collapse by the electrostatic Vp x B acceleration. Applications of current loop coalescence to solar flares are discussed.
