A model for the outburst of SN1987A is presented which permits a straightforward interpretation of the observed outburst behavior. The observations that can be understood in terms of the model include: (1) the progenitor of SN1987A was a blue supergiant; (2) the observed velocities are somewhat higher than the typical values for type II supernovae; (3) SN1987A was significantly dimmer at visual maximum that typical type II supernovae observed in normal spiral galaxies; (4) the bolometric luminosity has remained approximately constant over a period of weeks; (5) SN1987A exhibited an extremely rapid spectral evolution at both optical and ultraviolet wavelengths compared with other observed type II supernovae.
