The authors report on an experimental partnership proposed within Project ASTRO BOSTON in the school year 2000/2001. Traditionally, Project ASTRO pairs professional and amateur astronomers with classroom teachers in grade 4-9, but in this case the astronomer was paired to a second grade teacher at the Cummings School, of the Public Schools of Somerville, MA. The program consisted in an introductory part on who the astronomer is and what the astronomer does, and a second part focused on the basic patterns of the sun and the moon. Encouraged by the students interest, enthusiasm, and compelling questions, we proceeded with an introduction to the nine planets of the solar system that, according to the Science Standards and Benchmarks, is usually a topic for students in later grades. The six month program culminated with a one day presentation about the sun, on occasion of the celebrations for the 5 years of operation of SOHO. We report on the activities we developed as new or adapted from those developed for more advanced grades. We present the responses of the second grade students through drawings and writings they produced at different stages of the program, and an evaluation of the impact of this activity on the students' entire educational program.
