Exploring the Earth, Sun, and Stars is a technology-based collaboration for in-service and pre-service science teacher professional development to improved student learning in physical science and earth and space science. This project is a collaborative effort between six educational institutions: two higher educational institutions with teacher certification programs and four public school districts. The project brings together science educators, education faculty, and undergraduate students/pre-service teachers from the participating higher education institutions and in-service teachers from the public schools in the participating school districts. Participants in the project use videoconferencing for professional and program development, the Internet for resource sharing, and e-mail for communication between teachers and students. The project objective is to produce and field test standards-based classroom lessons targeted at grades 4-6 that use information from NASA web sites. This paper summarizes the project's structure and objectives and presents results from the project's first semester. Exploring the Earth, Sun and Stars is made possible by a Community of Agile Partners in Education (CAPE) Faculty Incentive Grant through a NASA funding project.
