The variability of some stars is explained in a qualitative sense by assuming the existence on their surface of antipodal active regions. The direction of the polarization is arrived at by the mean direction of the lines of force of the magnetic field above an active region. The variations in the polarization parameters are associated with rotation of such a star having a period equal to twice the period of the observed doubling of some spectral lines.
