The early development work on a mercury electron bombardment ion engine at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) is described, covering the period May 1968 to March 1970. Results from the earliest version using an oxide cathode are given. A comparison is made with results from the same engine using a hollow cathode and a modified magnetic field. The facilities and laboratory power supplies are also briefly described.
