Planetary science is a popular general education topic for non-scientists. While economic, large lecture classes are not conducive to student discussion or involvement. We have been experimenting with different techniques to enhance student involvement in lecture classes: concept questions, extensive classroom use of multiple choice transmitters and web-based learning tools. Development of such IT-based learning tools in planetary and space science are part of the EPO contributions to the Jupiter Magnetospheric EXplorer (SMEX) and the New Horizons mission to Pluto. We report on our experiences and evaluation of these techniques for enhancing learning.
