2471 Plasma Waves And Instabilities

Scientific paper

This poster presents the full propagation characteristics of the ion-acoustic instability in the presence of shear in the magnetic-field-aligned flow of the ions. Presented are direct measurements of the ion flow profile, the parallel and perpendicular components of the wavevector, the mode frequency and other relevant plasma parameters. Comparison between the experimentally-measured and the theoretically-predicted [Gavrishchaka et al.,PRL 1998, JGR 1999] shear-modified ion-acoustic instability dispersion properties show good agreement. This mechanism has been used to explain the features of the waves reported by space measurements which also indicate inhomogeneous parallel flow of ions [Gavrishchaka et al.,PRL 2000].
