To date no engineering simulation of a meteoric impact of submillimeter particles (closure velocity 57 km/s) has been feasible. The uses and limitations of current simulation methods, two stage light-gas guns, explosively actuated light-gas guns, electric rail guns are discussed, together with ideas on potential uses of electrostatic launchers, electrothermal accelerators, explosive shaped charge technology. It is concluded that electric rail gun technology represents the most likely approach for achieving accelerator performance levels of direct use for evaluating the meteoroid threat to deep space probes approaching an active comet.
