Research in experimental petrology in Australia has grown rapidly over the past twelve years. The distinctive character of this research has been a very direct relationship between natural petrology and experimental petrology so that, almost without exception, the topics of research have been motivated by a particular set of observations or hypotheses in petrogenesis which have arisen from field and laboratory petrological studies. There has also been a strong interaction with geophysical observations and deductions about the deep crust and upper mantle, emphasizing that experimental petrology can be a very direct tool in understanding earth processes and characteristics. The emphasis on the use of natural rock compositions has led to routine application of techniques of electron microprobe analysis and of control and monitoring of sample composition, at levels not commonly used elsewhere. The resultant studies in igneous petrogenesis, metamorphism, cation distribution and solid solution geothermometry and geobarometry, and roles of the volatiles H2O and CO2 in the upper mantle are reviewed. These studies have pioneered a ‘new’ experimental petrology in which natural rock compositions are crystallized at pressures of 0 40 kbar, T > 600°C. The resultant mineral assemblages can be identified and minerals analyzed with an accuracy similar to that obtainable from natural rocks of similar mineralogy. With this approach, experimental petrology of chemically complex, natural rock compositions will increasingly become a quantitative and analytical subject — Australian laboratories are well placed to play a leading role in these advances.
