The melting behavior of chondrites is critical to the understanding of planetary evolution for both the Earth and asteroidal processes. The experiments described in this paper use bulk meteorite samples in order to investigate the melting process itself in addition to determining equilibrium melt compositions at experimental conditions appropriate for the low-pressure reducing environment found in asteroids. The ordinary chondrite Leedey was chosen as the starting material because it is a fall, thereby minimizing terrestrial weathering, and because, as an L6 with low degrees of shock metamorphism, the mineral phases are homogeneous.
