Wetting

Scientific paper

In this paper we study the evaporation of a drop on rough substrates in PTFE and Aluminium, the drop of few millimetres size is evaporating in an environment of a controlled pressure. An experimental set up is built to investigate wetting behaviour of an evaporating binary drop on the two substrates with different roughness. The dynamic contact angle, the drop volume and the base width are measured using a non-intrusive optical technique. The investigations are carried out for pure water and ethanol substances. The evaporation rate and the contact angle for each substance are found to vary in a monotonous fashion. For the binary mixtures typical behaviours of the measured parameters were found, revealing several stages in the evaporation process. The wetting angle for the mixture is closely related to the drop volume as it evaporates. The evaporation rate seems to indicate that the more volatile component evaporates entirely in the first stage while in the last stage the evaporation of the less volatile component prevails.
