The paper describes the first experimental demonstration of dual recycling, an optical system which should considerably improve the performance of proposed laser-interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. The essential elements of the test system for dual recycling are described. The results are shown to be in excellent agreement with predictions: an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio by a factor of 7 was achieved.
