In this report experimental and theoretical determinations are compared of the orbital elements of Satellite 1960 ι1 (Echo 1) for the period August 13, 1960 (1 day after launching), through January 11, 1961. This comparison shows that the strikingly large variations of the eccentricity and the geocentric perigee distance are almost wholly attributable to the effects of sunlight pressure on the balloon. Atmospheric densities have also been inferred for the altitude range traversed by Echo. From the time variation of eccentricity, approximate values are deduced for the rate of gas leakage from the balloon. The present best estimate of the lifetime of Echo 1 is that, barring a substantial change in its shape, it will perish in July 1963.
