The flow around a cylinder was studied experimentally and numerically, to gain insight into fundamental aspects of high enthalpy flows over a basic aerodynamic configuration. The experiments were performed in the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel G¨ottingen (HEG) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Surface pressure and surface heat flux measurements were performed as well as measurements of the density distribution in the shock layer in front of the cylinder. The flow in the shock layer was subjected to various relaxation phenomena and therefore the presented measurements provide a useful basis for the validation of physico-chemical models used in CFD codes. This paper presents results of these experiments and comparisons between the measurements and the results of the numerical computations. A sensitivity study about the influence of different parameters of physico-chemical models on the CFD results is also discussed.
