Results are reported for an experimental investigation of how fine silicon particles prepared in argon by the gas evaporation technique cluster and grow as a consequence of mutual thermal collisions (coagulation). Mass distributions of particle clusters are obtained from micrographs of specimen grids located at various heights above the evaporating source. A simple coagulation model is used to derive the characteristics of the particle clustering during the experiment by comparing the mass distributions. It is found that a cluster of fine particles grows in a planar, rather than spherical, manner and that the clusters on every micrograph exhibit a necklace, or netlike, structure. Application of the results to grain growth in the primordial solar nebula indicates that the sedimentation time of grains sinking toward the equatorial plane of the solar disk becomes longer than the previously adopted value because of the large surface-area/volume ratio of a planar cluster.
