A description is given of the instrument used in the HELIOS A and B micrometeoroid experiment described by Gruen et al. (1976). The instrument is an impact ionization time of flight mass spectrometer (IIMS). The characteristics of the instrument make it suitable for an employment in comet intercept missions. Attention is given to the principles of operation of the instrument, its advantages and limitations, and the range of parameters which might be measured during a comet intercept mission.
