An expansion of the perturbation function due to the noncentrality of the earth's gravitational field is obtained. Terms of zeroth and first order relative to the earth's flattening are taken into account. Such an expansion is needed for the high-precision calculation of the coordinates of artificial earth satellites by the methods of perturbation theory using a non-Keplerian intermediate orbit, fully allowing for the second and third zonal harmonics in the expansion of the planet's gravitational potential. The present result differs from similar expansions obtained by Timoshkova (1972) in that allowance is made for the third zonal harmonic in the intermediate orbit of the satellite. The final equations are reduced to a form convenient for compiling a computer program.
