The statistical method of principal components is used to expand the observed magnetic field of the solar photosphere in an orthogonal basis. It is proposed that integral indices of the large-scale solar magnetic field based on principal components can be used as predictors of the behavior of the solar wind velocity in earth orbit as well as of the characteristics of the interplanetary magnetic field.
