The results of three observations of the rapid burster (MXB 1730-335) made in August 1983 are reported. A new mode of behavior consisting of strong persistent emission at a level of about 5 microJY along with type I bursts recurring approximately every 80 minutes, is reported. No type II bursts were seen during this interval. The spectrum of the persistent emission was similar to that seen from other burst sources. The ratio of the persistent intensity to the contemporaneous time-averaged type I burst intensity (alpha), was about 50. Eleven days later, the source had reverted to its rapid (type II) bursting mode, with no evidence for persistent emission. The intensity of the persistent emission on August 15 was a factor of 2.2 higher than the time-averaged type II burst intensity found 11 days later. During the early part of its activity in August 1983, the emission from the rapid burster closely resembled that of other burst sources.
