ESA activities in the area of Exobiology that have been ongoing for a number of years received a boost in November 2001 when the European Ministers responsible for space activities approved new funding for two programmes which will support future European exobiology activities. The European Life and Physical Sciences and Applications in Space (ELIPS) programme covers mainly research on the International Space Station, yet some resources will be available to also support exobiology beyond Low Earth Orbit. The other new programme, called Aurora, covers the formulation and implementation of a European long-term plan for the robotic and human exploration of the Solar System bodies, in particular those holding promise for traces of life. These two programmes represent a commitment by European countries to continue supporting exobiological research and develop Europe into a significant partner in planetary exploration.
