Since the 1980's the ESA microgravity life sciences activities have supported exobiology research with development and utilisation of experiment platforms. Platforms have been designed to allow exposure of experiment samples such as biological organisms and organic molecules to free space environment in Earth orbit. "BIOPAN" and "EXPOSE" are ESA platforms presently being exploited and developed. The ESA medium-term strategy in exobiology research beyond Earth orbit aims at creating a platform to support the search for life on Mars by in-situ investigations. Studies have been carried out to this end.
