The excitation states of the lowest rotational transitions of the CS molecule under the conditions of cold interstellar clouds are calculated. It is shown that, when interpreting observational data on CS radio lines, one must take into account significant deviations from local thermodynamical equilibrium. For the nucleus of L 183 the estimates are obtained of gas concentration 4 < lg nh (cm-3) < 5 and kinetic temperature 7K < Tk < 25K.
