On the basis of a 3-dimensional, time/space separated description of convective turbulence and the mixing length theory we calculated the excitation rate Edot = EΓ for a single solar p-mode. We found that Edot varies as ν7 or ν-5 according as ν is below or above 3 mHz. Our result for the higher frequencies resolves a previous difficulty with the observations. It appears that solar p-modes are excited mainly by Reynolds stress fluctuations, rather than by entropy fluctuations.
