An indirect proof of the extramagnetospheric origin of serpentine emission is proposed. Two sets of data are compared: (1) the variation of the cosine of the angle (psi) between the velocity vector of the interplanetary plasma and the interplanetary magnetic field as obtained from IMP 3 data, and (2) the dynamic spectrum of serpentine emission observed at an Antarctic station. The time run of the carrier frequency is seen to be similar in its general features with the cos psi data. Additional data on emission at the harmonics of the proton gyrofrequency are cited as evidence that serpentine oscillations are excited in the transition zone behind the front of a near-earth shock wave.
