There exists a selection rule forbidding (to first order) the 0-1 fine structure transition in collisions involving O(3P) or C(3P) and He or H2. Quantal close coupling calculations for O(3P) - He(1S) show this selection rule to be quantitatively significant, reducing the rate coefficient for the 0-1 transition by an order of magnitude relative to the 0-2 and 1-2 transitions. The rate coefficients for the latter two transitions are found to be similar in magnitude to those computed by Launay & Roueff for atomic hydrogen impact.
