The excitation of longitudinal waves by an external pump wave of high intensity and wavelength is examined in the framework of the kinetic theory of a relativistic multicomponent plasma. Attention is given to the role of the ion component in parametric processes of decay and modulation type at relativistic temperatures as well as to processes in electron-positron plasmas (of interest in connection with intense emission from pulsar magnetospheres).
