The excitation of HCN in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars is investigated. The multilevel radiative transfer calculations account for the hyperfine structure as well as the nonlocal radiative interaction between different layers through line overlap and absorption of hyperfine components inside the expanding shell. It is found that radiation is more efficient than collision in the HCN excitation which is strongly enhanced by the line overlap.
