Our paper presents the study of exchange coupling between two ferromagnetic layers, separated by a non-magnetic one. As a non-magnetic spacer layer we have chosen a metal, ruthenium, and an insulator, magnesium oxide. Two types of structures were elaborated. One consists of a Co/Ru/Co multilayer, deposited by means of e-beam evaporation, and the other of a Fe/MgO/Fe multilayer obtained through MBE. The morphological properties of the as deposited structures were determined by means of atomic force microscopy, while the study of the magnetic properties was carried out using vibrating sample magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements. A maximum in the exchange coupling strength was obtained for a Ru thickness of 0.8nm and for an MgO layer of 0.6 nm, respectively. The utility of the coupled structure as an artificial antiferrimagnet was exploited in the development of two types of spin valves, one for each coupled multilayer, each one exhibiting good giant magnetoresistive response.
