A plot of differential velocities and distances of members of groups of galaxies with respect to the brightest member of each group shows a correlation between these two quantities. This suggests that some groups are actually considerably spread in radial distance. Such a spread allows the possibility of a number of well known selection effects which could cause an apparent average excess redshift of group members with respect to the brightest galaxy.
