Comparative data from both ground-based and space-based observation of the surface of Titan with laboratory-produced Tholins suggest the atmosphere of Titan contains these same Tholins. These past comparisons have shown that the Titan Tholin is the best candidate in which to compare with the observations of Titan's atmosphere. The reflectivity of Titan measured by ground-based measurements (Veverka 1973) produced an optical constant that matches that of the laboratory produced Titan Tholin. Similarly, the optical constant measured by Voyager-based observation (Rages and Pollack 1980) again was the same as measured for the Titan Tholin. The Titan Tholin's optical constant is from the range of soft X-Rays to Microwave radiation (Khare et al. 1984) and upon analysis and comparison to the previously mentioned measurements, the Titan Tholin is the sample needed to compare to these global measurements.
Recent comparison of the Huygens Probe's DISR reflectivity with the Tholins produced in the laboratory has shown an obvious discrepancy when the curves are normalized. It appears that the measurement from the DISR differs significantly from any of the laboratory attempts, although the Titan Tholin produced at Cornell University shows the least divergence from the DISR curve. However, it is not similar enough that any comparison would yield useful information other that the fact that the Titan Tholin curve is closest to the DISR as compared to the Black and Yellow Tholins. However, the DISR sampled only one location on Titan, which is far from a global sample, and the comparison of the reflectivity of each produces an ambiguity because the Titan Tholin produced at Cornell University is much broader in its scope.
