It is argued that problems involving exact solutions, asymptotic structure, and approximation methods should be treated as much as possible in way that unifies research in these three areas. As a concrete application of this attitude, it is shown that conditions obtained from the asymptotic flatness requirement can be used in as derivation of the quadrupole radiation formula, eliminating the need to adopt a gauge condition. A new cylindrically symmetric radiative solution of the field equations is introduced, and a plan for rigorously proving the quadrupole radiation formula is sketched.
