We analyze the evolution of accreting white dwarfs in binary systems for a wide range of initial conditions. Specifically, evolutionary tracks are calculated for CO white dwarfs with masses in the range of 0.6 - 1.3 solar masses and accreting H-rich gas at rates of between 10-6 to 10-10 solar masses per year. Since the white dwarfs in these binaries could be very young or very old at the onset of mass transfer we simulated this possibility by investigating the evolution for a large range of internal temperatures. Thus most of the sequences generated were not thermally relaxed at the onset of mass transfer (and the thermonuclear flashes were not cyclic). We discuss the temporal dependence of the interior properties (envelope readjustment on a thermal timescale and compressional heating) on the initial conditions. Particular attention is paid to the white dwarfs accretors that remained small (relative to the Roche lobe radius) during the shell flash event. Finally, we use the results of these models to comment on the observed properties of Supersoft X-ray sources.
