Stellar Evolution: Computing
Scientific paper
Astronomers in Germany are finding that strategies developed for the biological sciences can be successfully applied to astrophysics calculations. Researchers from the Universitäts-Sternwarte in Göttingen decided to investigate how well the evolution strategy could be used to fit functions to complex data, such as those from spectra from stars. Standard fitting procedures like the Newton-Raphson method work best if you have an explicit function in mind, but the evolution strategy operates at a more abstract level, and has a big advantage because it is both model- and problem-independent. The astronomers used an evolution strategy algorithm to analyse their observations of white dwarfs in binary star systems, obtained using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE).
